My week in South Dakota Day 4 - End of my Adventure

Friday we drove to Spearfish Canyon

After we went to Spearfish we went to Deadwood and walked around. We had some ice cream cones then we went to the Deadwood Museum which was cool to see.

Things about Deadwood I learned was that Wild Bill Hickok got shot there, it was a founded during the Goldrush.

After Deadwood we went to the Bear Country U.S.A.

After the Bear Country we went back to the hotel and I went swimming again. When I was swimming I met a girl at the pool. She was a 13 yr old girl from Alabama but me and her have a bunch of stuff in common. We are both Homeschooled, she hates spiders & needles, and is afraid of heights - just like me, and we both want our first cars to be Mustangs.

Thursday we drove to Mount Rushmore.

I learned that the guy who carved the Presidents into the mountain died before he put add President Lincoln's ear.

Then we drove the Iron Mountain Road which is a road going up the side of the mountain that was a little high up plus the road had a lot of curves in it. After we drove the Iron Mountain Road we drove the Needles Road this had a lot of curves and tunnels. Here are some of the photos from driving..

When we where on are way back to rapid city me and my grandma did the go-carts on laps 1 through 3 my grandma was in the lead on the 4 lap I was about 2 ta 3 inchs away from bumping her and we came to a left turn to go over a bridge and my grandma went left after the left turn so I went right and passed her. When we got back to the hotel I went swimming agian.

My week in South Dakota Day 2

On Wednesday my grandma and I drove to Rapid City, then we drove 50 miles to Hot Springs to go to the Mammoth Site. The Mammoth Site was a really cool place to see because inside the building they have 55 Mammoths there. There is one in there that has no skull. It's cool there. Then we drove to Custer State Park we saw a lot of animals there. Then we went to the Reptile Gardens which was sweet. Then we went back to the hotel and I went swimming, meeting a couple of boys from Milwaukee, WI.

Check out their SITE ... I learned that all the Mammoths that they have found there are males, they can tell by the shape of their hip bone. They also found a Short-Nosed Bear which I found interesting. My favorite part about the Mammoth Site was the tour because they took us through the dig spot. The tour guide told us a story on how they were drilling a hole (about the size of a donut hole) .. and the drill bit broke, so they pulled it out and if it hadn't have broken they would have ended up drilling a hole through the top of a Mammoth Skull. The size of the skulls are amazing.

I would be interested in learning more about fossils and possibly participating in a dig site that you can help with. (You could do so there, but it had to be set up ahead of time)

At Custer we saw a ton of trees and animals, it was really cool because the animals would come right up to the cars and stuff. We had a Donkey that came up to us. The pictures, the donkey first goes to the car ahead of us, and then to us. He came over to my side of the car.

At the Reptile Garden we watched three movies: Birds, Snakes, and then Crocs & Alligators.

I learned that my Grandma doesn't like snakes (ha ha ha). I have always watched a lot of animal plant (Steve Erwin is one of my Heros) and I didn't really learn anything new, but I saw a bunch of Cobras (my favorite snake) and thought that was cool. I got to touch baby crocodiles, Grandma was to scared to touch the snakes so I missed my chance.

My week in South Dakota Day 1

The day my Grandma and I left was a Tuesday. We left at 5 in the morning after we got dressed and got every thing pack. We left my grandma's house and as we were backing out of the garage it was raining, so by the time we got to the cities we were in a thunder storm and by the time we got to South Dakota it was sunny. Which was weird and we drove all the way to Wall, S.D. and got to the motel about 4 pm. The hotel was nasty then we went to Wall Drug and had dinner there, got a couple of souvenirs. I got a real Raptor Claw fossil. After we finished shopping we went through the Badlands and my grandma didn't like the dirt roads because the wheels were shooting rocks up and the car was vibrating a lot.

Badlands: Use to be covered by the water, and this is how the water shaped the area by erosion. My Grandma told me Indians use to hide in the Badlands. The Badlands is a rich area to find fossils.

Assinment #3 7 things I enjoy doing and what I learn from them

#1: What I learned from Riding a bike is 1 thing is I get good exercise. Plus I learned that riding a bike is a physical activity. 2 thing: The 2 thing I learned is if your not careful when riding a bike you could get a Broken Arm like I did. 3 thing: My third and final thing I learned from riding a bike is if your good at riding a bike you can learn to do physical tricks like Wheelies, Skids, and other tricks but it takes practice a lot of practice.

#2: What I learned from Swimming. 1 thing: I learned Swimming is a physical activity. 2 thing: I learned from Swimming is that you can make a lot of new friends at a Swimming pool.

#3: What I learn from playing World of Warcraft Aka Wow. 1 thing: When I'am playing Wow I learn diffrent stratages. 2 thing: Another thing I learned about Wow is I make a lot of new friends.

#4: What I learn from T.V. 1 thing: When I watch a tv show called MythBusters I learn about Sciene. 2 thing: Plus I learn about Math because they do a lot of estimanting.

#5: What I learned from drawing. 1 thing: What I learned from drawing is how to be creative when I draw.2 thing: I also learned drawing is a type of cordnation called fine motor cordnation.

#6: What I learn from car magazines. 1 thing: What I learn from car magazines is I learn how to inprove the amount of horsepower being put out by the engine. 2 thing: I also learn how to install a new engine, supercharger,ect.

#7: What I learn from playing games with the family. 1 thing: I learn more strarageys. 2 thing:
The last thing I learn from playing games with the family is how to lose in a good way.

I would like being homeschooled becuase I would not be made fun of and I would also be at home. I would not be made fun of any more. I would be at home with my mom. I would be learning at my own pace and have help avalible when I need it. I wouldn't have to leave the house. I would be able to help my mom out when she needs it.

When I was 2 I got a stuffed killer whale and I named him Willy because I would always watch the movie free willy. So then right a way I started collecting killer whales. My collection is really big.

A Little About Cal

Hi ... my name is Calahan. I am 13 years old.

I am about to finish 7th Grade in public school, and start 8th Grade at home. Lucky me, I get to learn through the summer! Mom says learning never stops, and it's part of everyday life.

I have been bullied at school by a few kids and I don't feel comfortable there anymore, and if you aren't comfortable someplace, how can you learn there?

So my Mom decided to homeschool me. She actually homeschooled me long ago but stopped because of my little brother.

That is my Mom and my Step-Dad Dennis. He is pretty cool. My Dad is still around but I live with my step-dad. My brother Noah and and I have the same dad, and my brothers Nathan and Kaedyn are my step-dad's kids. He loves us all the same though. He is a great step-dad.

I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was 4 years old. My mom had me in pre-school but after I was done, she realized that public school wasn't the
place for me to thrive with my learning. My mom found out that my brother Noah would come very tiny, and he would come sick. The DRs told her that he wouldn't even live. He came in Feb. 2002 and he was early, 1lb 12oz.

Knowing that he was coming with issues, unique as she says, she made the hard choice to put me back into public school. It wasn't easy for her, but she knew she wouldn't have the time she needed to devote to my learning. So back into public school I went, and the following day, after my first day, my Mom ended up in the hospital, a few days later my brother came. That is me and my brother Noah when he was about a month old. He was so tiny, and I was 6. I was so happy to have a brother though, all I had wanted since I was 2 was a baby sister, but I guess a brother would have to do.

My mom and Dad had gotten a divorce after Noah was born and she met my step-dad when I was 10, (Noah was 4).

They were getting married, engaged, when she found out she was expecting my next little brother.

Half way through her pregnancy, we found out that he too, had problems. This time it was a cyst in his brain. He didn't come early but he came small. He was born with the weight of only 3lbs 4oz. To learn more about him, you can visit My Unique Flowers.

This is me outside his bed in the NICU. He was in the same bed, in the same spot, as my brother Noah. Mom said it must be good luck!

I was 11 and my brother Noah was 5 when Nathan was born.

I wasn't as scared when Nathan came along. I had already been through the whole NICU thing and knew all about it. It is something you don't forget.

Then a few months later, Mom found out she was expecting my littlest brother!

Kaedyn was born completely healthy! Mom says "YAY!" .. we got to go up to the hospital and hold him right away! Mom was in a regular room with the baby. Noah kept asking why we weren't at the NICU and staying at the Ronald McDonald House. Ha ha!

That is what was normal for us.

I was 12 when Kaedyn was born, Noah was 6, and Nathan was 16 months.
